TRIO Leadership Program

The Leadership Program has been established to provide participants with opportunities to gain leadership and mentoring skills, develop working relationships with faculty members and campus administrators, take advantage of research and internship positions, and participate in cultural and academic enrichment programs. Leaders will be considered part of the Cornerstone staff, and will benefit from a variety of unique opportunities, rotating through positions in research, special programs, mentoring, community outreach and more.

Who is eligible?

Participants will be TRIO-selected students who have shown they are successful members of the WU community, and who have an interest in serving their fellow-students and strengthening their professional skills. We will be maintaining 5 Leadership fellows and 5 additional emerging leaders each year. Leaders serve for a two year period.

What do Leaders do?

Leaders may help plan programs like:

  • January Intersession Program (JIP) : Leaders will help plan evening activities
    for participants, preparing informational handouts, curriculum, banquet event, etc.
  • Trio Welcome/Day/Symposium/Awards Program: Leaders will plan and implement a program in which TRIO students present their research to the University community; participate in the national TRIO Day recognition; and/or plan and implement a ceremony honoring outstanding TRIO students.
  • Summer Intensive Program (SIP): Leaders will help plan and implement the summer program, working as mentors, RAs, event coordinators, etc
  • Community Service/Community Outreach: Leaders will participate in a community outreach program of their choice and utilize their leadership skills and certifications.

Leaders will also have the opportunity to work with nationally recognized Leadership development organizations and participate in hands on, interactive activities.

What's In It for Leaders?

Fellows and emerging leaders will receive a base compensation upon selection and participation. Leaders will also receive leadership and career training, and will be directed toward a variety of special research, travel, and internship opportunities. Upon successful completion of the program, they will receive certification, and recommendations and documentation useful to their future careers. Leaders will develop unique mentoring relationships with faculty and staff, as well as with other students at the University and the community.
